About

About Paul

Paul spent decades teaching history in Connecticut, New York City, and New Jersey. It was his lifelong study and his favorite subject to share. Students and colleagues remember his sharp wit and unmistakable Boston accent.

In the 1990s, he moved to Saint Ann’s to join his longtime friend and classics teacher, Victor Marchioro. Saint Ann’s was always a place he treasured.

Although Paul taught at Saint Ann’s for only a handful of years before moving to New Jersey, his friendships with fellow teachers Victor and Bob Swacker lasted for decades. He stayed close to Victor until Victor’s 2008 death and saw Bob just a few years ago.

Always proud to be part of the Saint Ann’s community, Paul was delighted when his grandchildren, Nora (‘28) and Finn (‘30), became students there. On visits to Brooklyn, he loved engaging them in deep conversations about history and current events. He remained a teacher to the very end.

Paul’s wife, Beth, and his children, Dana, Justin, Rebecca, and Moses Hughes, created this fund in his honor to support Saint Ann’s teachers, provide additional resources for the classroom, and expand financial aid so that more students can experience the education Paul was so proud of, both as a teacher and as a grandparent.
